AVK DUCTILE IRON AIR VALVES - AEROKINETIC PRINCIPLE FOR WATER SYSTEMS

AVK air valves are a unique design (embodying Aerokinetic principle) of air relief valves for water systems. AVK air valves have capacities greater than those of other conventional air relief valves.

Top performance and high durability are the characteristic of all the different types of air valves in the range :-

  • Single Orifice Air Valve (Single Acting) - for automatically releasing air accumulating in pipelines during normal working conditions to prevent interferences with pipe flow capacity.
  • Double Orifice Air Valve (Double Acting) - include the functions as Single Orifice Air Valve as well as for automatically exhausting air from a pipeline when it is being filled with water, the air being released at a sufficiently high rate to prevent back pressure restriction of inflow rate; or for automatically ventilating a pipeline when it is being emptied of water, the air inflow rate being sufficiently high to prevent the developtment of high vacuum pressures in the line.

WHY USE AIR VALVE?

Air in Pipeline systems.

A liquid carrying pipeline cannot operate efficiently if air or gas is allowed to accumulate in the pipeline. Air and air with gas, may be present because :

  • The pipeline was fully charged with air/gas when empty
  • Air is entrained at pump station
  • Air is drawn in through faulty joints or glands
  • Air/gas is trapped in pockets during pipeline filling
  • Air/gas in solution is released due to changes in pressure and temperature

The presence of air in a pipeline can cause many problems :

  • Hastened Corrosion
  • Increased energy consumption and operation costs
  • Failure or inaccuracies in flow metering
  • Pressure loss or even complete flow stoppage
  • Delays in filling
  • Increased risk of Water Hammer
  • Sudden movement of air pockets can result in rapid change in flow velocity, leading to high pressure surges of a destructive nature.

USAGE & FUNCTIONS OF AIR VALVE

The unique design of 'Aerokinetic' principle of large orifice air relief valve operation prevents premature closure while air is being released from a pipeline.

With conventional large orifice valves there is a risk of premature closure and subsequent inconveniences.

When conventional valves discharge air at a high rate during the filling of a water main, the float may suddenly be caught up in the discharging air stream and close the valve before all air has been exhausted.

RECOMMENDED LOCATION OF INSTALLATION OF AIR VALVES

  • On rising mains from pumps to release and admit air
  • At local peaks in the system
  • At transition points in hydraulic gradient
  • At transition points in pipe slope, particularly before and after steep slopes
  • Every 500m along pipeline sections of long uniform slope
