WHAT IS ELECTROFUSION?

HDPE Electrofusion is a method of joining PE, HDPE and other plastic pipes using special fittings that have built-in electric heating elements which are used to weld the joint together.

The pipes to be joined are cleaned, inserted into the electrofusion fitting (with a temporary clamp if required) and a voltage, normally 40V is applied for a fixed time depending on the type, and size of the fitting in use. The built in heater coils then melt the inside of the fitting and the outside of the pipe wall, which weld together to form a very strong homogeneous joint. The assembly is then left to cool for a specified time. Then it's done.

In the electro fusion process a heating wire permanently mouled into the fitting gets heated by current at a low voltage. The surrounding material around the wire gets melted and expands due to the warming. The melt starts closing the gap between pipe and fitting, leading to a heat transition to the pipe which also gets heated and melts in the welding zone. The pipe material also expands.

The increasing material expansion between pipe and fitting, which is hindered by the cold zones outside the welding zone, leads to a build up a welding pressure between pipe and fitting and a homogeneous welding connection emerges.

Electrofusion Fields of Application

Electrofusion Piping Solution are mostly used in a harsh environment whether in term of location or situational wise. Normally electrofusion are widely used in Gas & Oil Field as the jointing are more secure and easy to execute. But more Electrofusion Fittings available today are greatly reduced the cost for Electrofusion Fittings thus more and more common household user convert from using conventional piping solution such as using weld to Electrofusion mainly because of the ease, fast and reliable jointing systems which are Electrofusion Fitting best known for.

  •     Normal Household piping system
  •     Gas and water applications
  •     Industrial applications
  •     Harsh work site use

Advantages of using Electrofusion Fittings

  • Electrofusion Fitting jointing are well known for it's security, reliable and long lasting jointing for Pipe and Fittings.
  • It's easy to execute. Electrofusion jointing are usually used when the harsh or difficult situation.
  • Electrofusion have always been the best system available to perform pipe jointing repairing.
  • It is a very quick and hassle free process to install the electrofusion fittings compared to other methods available today.
  • Electrofusion jointing process are done by automatic electrofusion machines that minimizes the failures and mistakes that may happend during normal jointing process. The machines also provides users with data and the process is fully monitored by the control box which ensure a safe and dependable connections.

Differences Between Electrofusion and Conventional Heat Fusion

  • Method Of Fusion Jointing
The main difference between conventional heat fusion and electrofusion is the method by which the heat is applied. In conventional heat fusion (butt, saddle and socket) joining, a heating tool is used to heat the pipe and fitting surfaces. The electrofusion joint is heated internally, either by a conductor at the interface of the joint or by a conductive polymer. Heat is created as an electric current is applied to the conductive material in the fitting. HDPE pipe to pipe connections made using the electrofusion process require the use of electrofusion couplings.
  • Size and Diameter of Both Pipe & Fitting
Electrofusion is applicable to pipe sizes from 16mm to 710mm, whereas butt fusion is applicable to pipe sizes from 50mm to 2000mm.
  • Jointing with Different Wall Thickness
The Butt fusion can only be joined with the same pipe's wall thickness, while Electrofusion can be jointed even when the pipe's wall thickness is different.
  • Jointing with Different Pipe Materials
Electrofusion can be used to join a variety of different grade of the same materials. For Instances, MDPE to HDPE.

AWT HDPE Electrofusion Fittings are the fittings produces by the Fusion Group UK. The Fusion Group was the pioneers for HDPE Pipe Jointing System and have been established for nealy fifty years.

Fusion Group Limited was founded in 1971 and pioneered polyethylene pipe jointing in the UK and across the globe.  Fusion became a member of the AVK Group of Companies in 2017 when AVK Holdings A/S acquired the majority share of Fusion Group Ltd in a move that created one of the UK’s largest gas and water sector products suppliers. The combined turnover of the AVK UK activities and Fusion Group Limited operation will be in excess of £75 million, and will supply gas and water markets around the world. Fusion Group operates globally, with manufacturing sites in the UK, China and Egypt, wholly-owned or joint-venture distributors in over 20 countries, and direct sales into a further 30 international territories. The Group’s headquarters are located in Chesterfield, England.

Some of the unique features and advantages of AWT HDPE Electrofusion Fittings :

  • Fusamatic Pin
Invented by Fusion, the Fusamatic pin provides a totally automatic method for ensuring the correct welding parameters are used. Within each Fusamatic pin is a resistor. When the electrofusion box is connected to the fitting, the Fusamatic pin enables it to automatically identify the correct fusion time required to make the joint. All the operator has to do is press go!
  • Indicators
The pressure created by the expanding molten plastic in the jointing area inside the fitting during the electrofusion process will force out the indicator lugs. This is a visible sign that the necessary jointing pressure has been achieved.
  • Moulded-in welding parameters
Manual welding parameters are moulded into the body of all Fusion’s fittings. Information provided includes fitting size, material (PE80 or PE100), applicable pipe SDRs, weld parameters, and pressure ratings for gas and water applications.
  • Permanently marked batch number
The injection mould batch number is just one of numerous quality control identifiers on each Fusamatic fitting. It is replicated on the fitting’s barcode.
  • Barcode
Quality control is central to the success of Fusion’s fittings. The barcode provides full traceability right down to the polymer batch; the raw material from which the fittings are manufactured for each individual fitting. The barcode also carries the welding parameters for use with electrofusion boxes equipped with a barcode scanner. The new QR code on all fittings illustrate full traceability on each individual fitting that reaches the consumer.
